South Africa Development in Football

South Africa and Development Football
The Most successful footballing countries in the past 4 to 8 years have been mostly in Europe and South America. With too many question asked to why is that so, the best answers or rather answer could be development football.
Firstly, at what age do they refer a youngster to? 16-21, 18-23?
Let’s start by naming a few international youngsters
Name Date of BirthNationality Club Postition

The above mentions are players between the ages 18-22 and most have represented their national teams at every age level. Most of them are chasing high numbers with their senior caps.
Now the points to highlight here are; age, sustainability, replacements and versatility. Most of these players have become very instrumental for both club and country at a very young age and already are making waves in the European leagues for their respective clubs.
Development & Academy:
Development football is everywhere in the world but do we as South Africa, as a footballing nation know its use? Do we know how to benefit from it? Do we pay enough attention and money to see it grow?
Well the answer to that is; No, but firstly let me acknowledge Multichoice for taking initiative in partnering with the PSL by presenting The Multichoice Diski Challenge. The initiative is huge in a way that it’s making waves more than the NFD and I think it’s great that it closes the gap between the Development and the first team.
But if it wasn’t for the MDC (Multichoice Diski Challenge) I don’t think development would be making waves as it is at the moment. South Africa should start capitalising on such initiatives as the MDC because we have vast talent and it’s up to us to groom it. Since we have given these youngsters a platform I think teams (senior head coaches, technical directors) should now start looking to create depth from within the team. I believe the transition for the young players will be easy, moving from the development to the first team. By doing this, not only are the PSL teams benefiting but the national squads too (u/17- Bafana Bafana) & we have sustainability of players, and I mean quality players. Transition also from u/17 to the senior national team will be very smooth for players
To make sense I will compares us to other footballing nations; taking a look at the former and current World Cup winners Span and Germany.
They have had a solid selection of players who had been together from developments.

Spain
Sergio Busquets, Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez, Gerard Pique, Carles Puyol, Cesc Fabregas (6) coming from the La Mas academy and they implemented the tiki-taka style within the first team and also in the national team with a few Real Madrid players. So the transition of the other 5  Busquets, Iniesta, Xavi , Pique, Fabregas joining Carles Puyol who was the oldest in the Barcelona team was smooth becomes the adaption to the style of playing is similar and it’s the basic style of Catalan football. And one most important factor these players have a winning mentality which is taken from their club performances.
Germany
The current World Champions are made up of versatile players, players from different parts of the world (leagues). The key of this national team was the amount of players who have played together throughout the different age groups of the nation and some of course from Bayern Munich.
The likes of Michael Ballack, Thomas Hitzlberger, Frings , Lehman and with their retirement, they didn’t leave much of a void in the team when they retired because the likes of Schweinstiger, Lahm, Butt and Jansen, Lukas Podliski, Miroslav Klose  were player part of the Bayern Munich team and of which it also has a certain development structure. This now has also linked up the likes of Toni Kroos, Thomas Muller to link up with the likes of Sami Khedira, Mesut Ozil, Mario Gotze and Marco Reus from the young national German teams. These players end up being together in the senior national team and familiar with each other and know how one player plays and they are able to connect.
What’s The Case with South Africa?
When it comes to South Africa, players are always rotated we have never had a consistent call up of players. And I believe that some players who were getting the call up had it easy because there was not much competition.  With the national team, we have so much talent to choose from. I believe in the next year or two national coaches should even have difficulty of calling up players because of the vast of young talent at our disposal.

Before we continue let’s take a look at the youngsters from South Africa:

With the South African players I have mentioned over 15 players, with intentions to highlight that we have so much talent but then it’s all thanks to the MDC that we have seen some of these youngsters proving themselves, whereas some of the players mentioned above have had some game time in the PSL.

Rivaldo Roberto Coezee, South Africa’s latest discovery, the youngster has made a name for himself becoming the youngest capped player for SA at age 17 but his record was then quickly surpassed by Fagrie Lakay recently, something which puts a huge smile on my face and a million other football fanatics. He is continuously included in the starting 11 of Rodger De Sar. And is now the heart of defence for Ajax.
Abbubaker Mobara, partnering Coetzee in defence, Mobara has been exceptional for Ajax, also being eyed by a few big clubs in the PSL. Mobara is also versatile, on some occasions he has been seen marshalling the midfield for Ajax. SuperSport Commentators Sizwe Mabena and Brain Mathe mentioned that they prefer him in that position for he is more offensive going forward and coming back and helping out in defence.
Olwethu Nguye 18-year-old Olwethu Nguye had a success story of his own when he made his PSL debut after replacing Keagan Dolly in the 72nd minute in one of the PSL matches. Head coach Roger de Sa previously stated that the Urban Warriors has the best academy in the country, and Nguye is yet another testament to the Ajax philosophy of ‘No Youth No Future’. “My football career started at Vasco da Gama back in 2004 at the age of eight, but only played there for one year before I was scouted by Ajax while playing in a tournament,”
The Langa born player mentioned that some of his football achievements was making the SA under 19 National Team, travelling to Amsterdam to partake in the Copa Amsterdam and Terborg TNT (which Ajax made to the semi-finals in both tournaments), and picking up the Player of the Season award twice while coming through the academy ranks.

Ziyaad Eksteen, The attacking midfielder proved himself during the pre-season camp in George and will be a great addition to the squad of Roger de Sa. Last May, the Salt River born player, played a major role in the European campaign of the U19 team, only missing out on two of the 12 matches. Ari Efstathiou: “Once again the Ajax Youth Academy has proved its value. This fine youngster has been in the academy since the age of ten and impressed the technical team on many occasions. I am convinced he will become one of our future stars within the first team.”
 (Source: www.kickoff.com)

Morne Nel, 18 years, great physique, vision, physical presence in the midfield, wears Number 17 for Supersport, and I noticed him when he was just 17.The player was included in the squad against Orlando Pirates in their 2-1 loss in the PSL and supplied Thuso Phala with a great assist, showing great vision and great technical ability. Coach Gordon Igesund not well known for his faith in the youngsters, but compliments to him for spotting the talent coach Cavin Johnson noticed too.
Lorenzo Gordinho, 20 years of age, great physique, physical presence in the defence and he is able to read the game. It was great to see the former Benoni High man being a defensive option for Coach Stuart Baxter. The Player is seen as replace to either Morgan Gould or Tefu Mashamaite who are now in their 30s.

Having mentioned 4 Ajax players, it comes with acknowledging them as the leading team who are more determined to open up a platform for young upcoming talent. And also upholding their philosophy.
South Africa has talent, especially these youngsters, if we can capitalise on that, moving forward as a footballing unit we are going far as the PSL and Bafana Bafana.
Some teams are suffering and finding it hard to maintain their performance week in-week out in the PSL. Amazulu are placed last in table standings with a single win in 15 games. At the start of the season they had less the 5 players under 23 not 19 but 23, showing that the team lacks a bit of freshness when it comes to young talent.
Sundowns too, has a lot of players, young and destined but obviously they have so much buying power so it’s very rare for them to go into their youth ranks and obtained what they require. But I believe if you have 3-5 players who are top of the drawer and are almost similar with their style of play and mostly in the same position, it affects not only the team but also the national team, because some good players are on the bench and it limits the national coach’s options. Even though it provides the team with depth but if a player is top class and knows he deserves some game time it’s not always pleasant atmosphere on the training ground.

Back in the late stages of the 90s (97,98), Mr Farouk Khan was in charge of the young boys of Kaizer Chiefs and at the that time 5-7 players in the starting line-up where from the development. So as a team it’s easy to plan moving forward because we have depth and we can either buy 2-3 players in the transfer window just to have more options based on experience, quality and future uses.
This also has been evident for the likes of Arsenal, Arsene Wenger’s philosophy of utilizing young players and continuously introducing new talent has helped the world of football, they benefit from it along the way. Arsenal has off-loaded some sensational talent to teams around Europe. And with this philosophy Arsenal is not renowned for breaking the bank when it comes to the transfer window. Yes they are not winning trophies season in and season out but they are always top seeded when it comes to the UCL. And always part of the top four in EPL.    I say let’s use this initiative of the MDC to enhance and strengthen the depth in our teams. By that we create an extended run of competition for a starting line-up; we are giving the national coach more options to choose from. And we must give credit to Coach Shakes Mashaba his use of young blood has moved South Africa up in the FIFA rankings and we secured a spot in 2015 AFCON without a defeat.
The platform for young players has not been a good one for young talent in SA, yes we have seen a few tournaments being hosted but where else do we see these players, and  what happens to them,

I am a strong believer of young talent, and I believe that if we can take youngsters seriously. Tactically, with the mixture of South Africa football (flair) these youngsters seem to understand the tradition of local football, with that being the image of South African football we are moving forward in positive direction. I plead to PSL coaches along with their tactical & technical teams please give these youngsters their chance, keep their hope alive. With all due respect some of the first team players in most teams have become very complacent with the fact of knowing that a starting position is guaranteed. I say the introduction of a few young sensational players to challenge a few players; it will keep their standard of the team up along with its performance.
In final words, South Africa is forever blessed with talent and week-in-week-out we have Soccer Laduma and Kick Off having retired players sharing their experiences about the game and how some wish they had done the right things to stay on top of their game and how they wish to help the upcoming stars not do the same mistakes but also sometimes these players run out of patience so it’d be good to give them a taste to what they should be patient for.
Masibusane Zongo was part of package that came with the likes of Kermit Erasmus and Kamohelo Mokotjo, my word, what a talented left-footed player who should causing havoc in the PSL but with speculations stating his ill-discipline issues, breaks my heart and other football fanatics. I don’t want to see another aspiring footballer going down the same path. Again thanks to the Multichoice Diski Challenge that they are helping with Life Skills and Financial Advising to the young players participating in the MDC.
As Ajax Cape Town’s philosophy says “NO YOUTH NO FUTURE”.

Isco: Spain And Madrid Have The Best Players In The World

Spanish midfielder, Isco, believes that Spain and Real Madrid boast the best players in the world.
The Los Blancos midfielder started his first game for the national side and capped it off with a fine strike in their 3-0 win over Luxembourg on Saturday and the 22-year-old was happy with his first start and his goal.
"I just shot and luckily it was a good effort," Isco told reporters after the game.
"It opened the scoring and it helped us - but it could have ended up in the clouds!"
"I'm making the most of my opportunities. I don't know if this is my best moment. When I wasn't playing I just tried to work hard and keep going."
Isco added that he will continue work hard to make it tougher for the coaches to decide on who to play.
"That doesn't depend on me," he added.
"I just try to work hard and earn it day in, day out. It's up to the coaches.
"The national team and Real Madrid have the best players in the world. I just try to make things difficult for the coaches to decide."

'Mourinho Ended Barca’s Dominance'

Jose Mourinho's former assistant at Real Madrid, Aitor Karanka, has praised the Chelsea manager for ending Barcelona's La Liga dominance and explains the 'love' which the squad at the Bernabeu had for him.
Middlesbrough boss, Karanka, believes Mourinho's successor, Carlo Ancelotti, is held in the same high esteem by his 'far superior' side as the Portuguese was during his time there.
“He (Mourinho) is the best coach in the world. He has shown it and tactically he is a hundred steps ahead of the others,” he told As.
“He came (to Madrid) after stopping Barcelona before, with Inter (Milan). Barca had won six titles and Jose stopped them. If not for him, they would have repeated another six titles.”
The 41-year-old has been impressed with the man who replaced Mourinho and believes winning La Decima elevated Ancelotti to the same place in the hearts of Real players and fans as Mourinho.
“They play very well. They are far superior to the rest (of the teams in Europe),” he added.
“Ancelotti is a good manager of the group, also, I look at him and I learn.
“The player’s love him, like they love Mourinho and it was said that he didn't talk to the squad, but that was a lie, as Iker (Casillas) has said that Jose cared for him every day.”
During their time at Madrid together, Mourinho and Karanka won the La Liga once and the Copa del Rey, in the process ending Barca's dominance of the Spanish title.
Do you think Ancelotti has made Real Madrid much better than Mourinho? Have your say in the comments section below.

Ousted Diski teams leave a mark

After the grueling group stage of the MultiChoice Diski Challenge, eight teams have exited the competition. But they left a lasting impression in the inaugural reserve league and also gained valuable experience in the process.
The teams accumulated 12 wins among themselves and scored a staggering 70 goals combined - which explains the quality that they all possessed.
The two youngsters, who are joint second on the top-scorers list, come from two of the eliminated teams. Deadly striker Khanyisa Mayo netted four times for Chippa United in five matches. Free State Stars' promising juvenile Jackson Maphathe also scored four goals from the midfield.
However, the eight teams suffered 28 defeats combined, with 13 coming from the Group A teams - where Maritzburg United and Moroka Swallows lost four each. The Group B sides lost 15 matches, with bottom-placed AmaZulu handed six losses.
Another downfall was the 104 goals they conceded. The Group B teams let in 54 goals while their Group A counterparts conceded four goals lesser.
We take a look at the teams' progress in the tournament;

Their next match against Tuks at the Cape Town Stadium ended in a goalless draw, a result that put their hopes for qualification in danger. Celtic edged them 1-0 in their must-win final match in Kimberly, resulting to them bowing out of the competition.

The KZN side went three matches without any win or point. They lost 1-0 against Chiefs in the opener, the second match ended in a 2-1 defeat against Tuks. SuperSport handed them their third-straight loss when they went down 2-0 at home. They got their first points against Ajax in Pretoria, where Sheldon van Wyk and Menzi Chili gave them a 2-1 victory. They followed with a 1-1 draw against high-flying Celtic, with Sandile Dlamini scoring the equaliser. The two results meant they were then in contention for the quarterfinals, with two games to go. But a 1-1 draw against struggling Swallows resulted in them being eliminated before the final match. They then finished with a 6-2 defeat away to Polokwane.

Another defeat followed as they went down 2-0 to Tuks at the Dobsonville Stadium. Swallows then travelled to Pretoria to play two back-to-back clashes under pressure to get good results. It didn't go as planned as they suffered a 2-1 loss against Polokwane and drew 1-1 with Chiefs the following day. The results confirmed their elimination from the tournament with two games remaining. In their sixth match, they got a 1-all draw away to Maritzburg, who also fell out of contention. They lost their final encounter 3-0 against SuperSport.

The Students were held to a 1-1 by Platinum Stars in the opening match in Umlazi, conceding a late goal after Mthokozisi Msomi had given them the lead. That clash was followed by an entertaining 3-3 draw against Mpumalanga Black Aces in Soweto, Tshidiso Monamodi and Elasto Kapowezha scored with the third one being an own goal. They then edged Pirates, who had not dropped any points, 2-1 in their next match - through goals from Asive Langwe and Msomi. They lost 2-0 against Free State Stars in their first match in Pretoria and drew 1-1 with Mamelodi Sundowns the following day, with Monamodi finding the target. Another 1-all draw against bottom-placed AmaZulu put their qualification hopes in jeopardy. They needed to win their last match and also hope the other results went to their favour. With the other rivals winning their matches, they were eliminated despite beating Chippa United 3-1.

Diski star Masuku makes Pirates debut

Orlando Pirates’ MultiChoice Diski Challenge star Menzi Masuku made his debut for the senior team in the Telkom Knockout clash on Saturday.
The midfielder had been a star performer for the young Buccaneers throughout the group stage, scoring two goals and collecting two man-of-the-match awards.
Masuku came on as a late substitute against SuperSport United with Pirates trailing 2-0.
That showed the confidence coach Vladimir Vermezovic already has in the youngster, bringing him on at such a critical stage with the team needing someone who would be able to lift them.
It may also be seen as the Serbian’s way to prepare the youngster for the various challenges of the game as early as possible, to speed up his readiness.

The Questionable Ballon D'or List

And it is no surprise to see that Cristiano Ronaldo is favourite for the prize after playing such a big part in Real Madrid's décima last season.

Teammate Gareth Bale is the only British player included, as well as archrival Lionel Messi, while five Premier League players find themselves on the (quite long) shortlist. They are Diego Costa, Eden Hazard, Thibaut Courtois, Angel Di Maria and Yaya Toure.

Meanwhile, three current Premier League managers find themselves nominated for the Fifa World Coach of the Year award.

But that doesn't stop us asking the important questions about some of the missing - or present - names:

1) Where is Luis Suarez?
Getty Luis Suarez (C) poses with the Goden Boot Trophy as the best goal scorer in all European Leagues
Best goalscorer in Europe's top five leagues... but not on the Ballon d'Or list
He loves a bite, of that there can be no doubt, but despite his numerous and quite significant flaws, what can't be argued is that wee Luis had a pretty good season last year.

In fact, it was one of the best by any Premier League striker ever - scoring 31 goals in 33 Premier League appearances and generally vanquishing any team that stood in his path.

Yet Eden Hazard is on the list ahead of him? Curious.

Luis Suarez's Liverpool record

2) Is a good world cup enough to get you on the list?
Julian Finney Javier Mascherano of Argentina tackles Arjen Robben of the Netherlands as he attempts a shot against goalkeeper Sergio Romero during the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil Semi Final match between the Netherlands and Argentina at Arena de Sao Paulo on July 9, 2014 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The monster Masche: Javier Mascherano was great in Brazil, but is that enough?
Javier Mascherano was probably one of the top three performers at this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

He dragged Argentina to the final, covering huge amounts of ground as he balanced out an attacking team built around Lionel Messi.

And all after a pretty mediocre season - by his standards - at Barcelona.

3) Why isn't Brendan's name in the envelope?
Brendan Rodgers may sometimes verge on the David Brent with his unusual delivery and confused footballing jargon.

But, like the above Luis, there does seem to be a bit of an oversight in excluding the Northern Irishman after he so overachieved with the Reds last year.

Action Images Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers before the match
Real Mad: Brendan looking peeved at last week's Champions League tie
Granted, he didn't match the heights of Diego Simeone's overachievement at the Calderón, but he only fell - or slipped - a few points short of winning the most unlikely league title for around 20 years. Maybe even longer.

And all while playing attractive, attacking football.

No doubt he'll find a philosophical way to think about it.

4) ...and then why is Jose Mourinho on it?
So if Brendan Rodgers misses out on the list, then how come his mentor Jose Mourinho makes it?

Chelsea finished below Liverpool, spent more, and won no trophies - so it was hardly a season of vintage coaching excellence from the Blues boss.

So are they basing it on Mourinho's men being a few points clear at the top in October?

If so, they shouldn't.

(Nb. This is usually the point that everyone blames the meeeeja)

5) Can a goalkeeper ever win it?
No, probably not.

Manuel Neuer is great, but if he were to win in an era where we have two of the greatest attacking players to ever play the game then we should all have football confiscated from us.

6) Is Andres Iniesta a justified inclusion?
Friedemann Vogel - FIFA
The picture that tells the story of Iniesta's summer
This feels a little bit like sacrilege, but it begs the question over how the shortlist is compiled.

Is Iniesta among the top 23 most talented players in the world? Of course. But so is Luis Suarez, easily, and he didn't make it.

Did Iniesta have anything even approaching a good year last year? I'm not so sure.

Three goals and seven assists in 35 La Liga games is not a great haul. Teammate Cesc Fabregas got more.

Hey, even Carlos Vela got 16 goals and 12 assists in a far worse side and he wasn't tainted by one of the most disastrous World Cup campaigns ever seen.

7) ...which leads us on to Koke
As in last night's ludicrous La Liga awards, Atletico Madrid were criminally overlooked.

Of course, you could argue that their success was down to team ethic, hustle and fight , and thus their individuals didn't shine as much.

But that would be overlooking the contribution of players like Koke to their astonishing achievements last season. Atleti, let's remember, smashed the duopoly that looked set to keep a chokehold on La Liga for years and years to come. And they did it on a fraction of the budget.

Ice cold: Koke was inexplicably omitted from the shortlist
Oh, and they were a matter of minutes from pairing that with a Champions League trophy.

Koke was at the centre of that, and even put up better stats than the aforementioned Iniesta - so his absence remains a sad mystery.

8) Klinsmann?
Klinsmann bows out of the World Cup at the last 16 stage - then gets nominated for coach of the year
Right, there is no doubt that the USA were great fun at the World Cup and involved in some ripsnorting games.

But the German took a consistently top 20-ranked side to the last 16 of a tournament and got nominated as one of the best 10 coaches in the world?!

Surely Costa Rica's Jorge Luis Pinto - who emerged from a tougher group than the Americans before narrowly losing on penalties to the Dutch - should be considered after getting a round further than Klinsmann?

GROUP A going down to wire

The fight for the quarterfinals places goes down to the final matches in the tightly contested MultiChoice Diski Challenge Group A.
Six teams are still in the race for a spot in the knockout round going into the last group stage clashes on match-day seven.
Bloemfontein Celtic and Kaizer Chiefs are on 11 points, with Celtic on top due to their superior goal difference. SuperSport United are third on 10 points, they can finish top if they win and the leading pair fail to.
A draw may be enough for the current top three teams. University of Pretoria and Ajax Cape Town, who are place fifth and sixth respectively, can only finish on 11 points. That's when the goal difference will come into place as a deciding factor.
Polokwane City are fourth on the log and need a win to secure their quarterfinals spot, victory will move them to 12 points.
All the matches take place on Saturday with two being contested at the Galeshewe Stadium in Kimberley, which is the venue for the tournament's final festival weekend of the year. The other two clashes will be hosted by the home sides at their home grounds.
In the first encounters at 10am, SuperSport, who need a win to qualify, host Moroka Swallows at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria. Celtic and Ajax will kicko ff the festivities in Kimberley, where Celtic will finish top of the group if they win. Ajax, on the other hand, need a win to have any chance of reaching the next round.
At noon, Tuks face Chiefs in another must-win clash at the Galeshewe Stadium. Tuks will join Chiefs on 11 points if they win, it will then be left to the other results to determine which of the two teams go through. Victory will help Chiefs finish top if Celtic drop points.
Polokwane, who will be looking for a win to seal their quarterfinal spot, meet Maritzburg United at the Noordelikes Rugby Club. Kick-off is also at noon.

Diski group stages conclude in Kimberly

The Northern Cape will have the honour of bringing down the curtain on the group stages of the MultiChoice Diski Challenge (PSL Reserve League) on the weekend of October 25-26 at the Galeshewe Stadium in Kimberley.
With just two of the eight quarterfinal spots secured, the two-day festival will be a jostle for the remaining six spots.
Entry into Galeshewe Stadium is free with tickets available at all Shoprite/Checkers and Computicket outlets from Tuesday, 21 October until Friday, 24 October. Two tickets are allocated per person. Please note no tickets will be issued on match day.
Other than the football, fans will also get to enjoy entertainment from Kimberley’s local artists.
Leading up to the weekend, Kimberley’s own Jimmy Tau along with Jabu Mahlangu and Fezile Makhanya will be visiting schools, malls and communities in the Galeshewe community to promote the festival. The promotion will include ticket giveaways and spot prizes.
It’s an opportune moment for the MultiChoice Diski Challenge, a tournament which seeks to unearth and polish South African football’s next diamonds, to come to the Northern Cape while the province is still basking in the glory of its latest diamond discovery, Rivaldo Coetzee. The Kakamas-born Coetzee recently became the youngest player to represent the country at senior level when he made his debut against Congo Brazzaville in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at just 18.

Diski Challenge Team Of The Week

The battle for the MultiChoice Diski Challenge knockout round spots continued in match-day six last weekend. While Group B produced two quarterfinals, Group A is wide open as the four spots are still available. We reveal the team of the week - a regular feature on supersport.com.
Mamelodi Sundowns claimed their berth in the next round after beating Mpumalanga Black Aces 3-0 to move to 14 points. They were joined by their Group B rivals Orlando Pirates, who recorded a 2-1 comeback win over Free State Stars to reach 12points.
The four places are still up for grabs in Group A, although Bloemfontein Celtic are technically through as they will still finish fourth even if they lose their final match - thanks to their high-scoring run that has given them a healthy goal difference.
University of Pretoria's Thakasani Mbanjwa takes the goalkeeping spot after denying the impressive striking force of Ajax Cape Town as they played to a goalless draw. The young keeper kept his cool and wasn't intimidated by the iconic Cape Town Stadium. The match was a curtain-raiser for the PSL clash between the Ajax senior side and Kaizer Chiefs.
There is a twist in defence as the judges opted for a 3-5-2 formation and picked three defenders. Making the team is Roscoe Pietersen, who kept the free-scoring Celtic at bay in their 2-1 win. He capped his performance with a goal when he netted the second.
He is joined by left-back Simphiwe Mtsweni from Kaizer Chiefs, who impressed against Polokwane City and created a goal after starting a move from his own half to set up Mduduzi Nyandeni. Markus Lecki kept out the resurgent AmaZulu to help Bidvest Wits get a point that ensured they remain in the race for a quarterfinal spot. His exploits earned him a spot in this week's team.
The midfield is made up of Free State Stars' Jackson Maphathe, who continued his good scoring form, to join the other top scorers on four goals. Hendrick Ekstein (Chiefs), Thabo Rakhale (Pirates), Sifiso Mnguni (Platinum Stars) and Mothusi Gopane (Polokwane) complete the midfield. Mnguni will drop back to assist the three-man defence.
The impressive Gopane was again on target for Polokwane against Chiefs. Mnguni also scored late in the game to earn Platinum a draw. Ekstein and Rakhale won the man of the match awards, playing for Chiefs and Pirates respectively.
The attack is led by Sundowns' Tebogo Reed, who scored a brace against Black Aces, as the young Brazilians became the first team to qualify for the quarterfinals.
He is partnered by Siyanda Ngubo, who came in as a substitute to score twice in three minutes, to help Pirates seal their place in the next round.

Wits end Pirates' unbeaten run in Diski

Bidvest Wits needed a late goal to end Orlando Pirates' unbeaten run in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge Group B match at Bidvest Stadium on Sunday.
The young Students opened the scoring in the 29th minute through Asive Langwe. Substitute Katlego Ntwaisha found the equaliser for Pirates with five minute remaining on the clock, but Mthokosizi Msomi secured the win when he scored four minutes later.
It was Wits’ first win of the tournament after drawing their first two matches, they become the first team to stop Pirates who had won all their clashes coming into the match.
The first chance fell to Tebogo Moerane who took a good shot at goal to force a save from Pirates' goalkeeper Philani Zikalala in the third minute. Msomi got a great chance to open the scoring in the 17th minute after receiving a back-heel pass from Langwe, but his shot went wide.
Pirates’ striker Sibusiso Mahlangu forced goalkeeper Tumelo Taunyane to make a double save from six yards in the 20th minute after being put through.
Nine minutes later, Langwe put Wits ahead when he headed into the net from the entertaining Moerane’s cross, beating Zikalala.
The teams continued to attack each other in the second half with Irwin Isaacs getting an opportunity to increase the lead, but his shot went over the goals in the 52nd minute.
Pirates launched a number of attacks after that but they found the Wits' defence, which was marshalled by Markus Lecki, difficult to break.
Substitute Siyanda Ngubo had his shot from inside the box saved by Taunyane in the 58th minute. Seanego Masalaelo missed a golden opportunity to pull the Buccaneers level three minutes later when he shot wide from six yards, that was the striker’s last action as he was replaced.
Pirates got the equaliser when Ntwaisha put the ball into the net after Khumbulani Mkhize had headed Menzi Masuku’s corner into his path.
A minute later, Isaacs headed over when he found himself unmarked in the box. In the 89th minute, Isaacs turned a provider when he crossed to Msomi – the striker made no mistake as he controlled and fired to beat Zikalala and give Wits their first win.

Aces, Sundowns lead Diski Group B

Mpumalanga Black Aces moved top of Group B when they came back from a goal down to register a hard fought 3-1 victory over Platinum Stars in their MultiChoice Diski Challenge match at the Olympia Park Stadium in Rustenburg on Sunday.
Dikwena opened the scoring first with Thembelani Matlawe in the 14th minute.
But the Mpumalanga based outfit visitors staged a comeback with goals from Essau Mtsweni in the 41st minute and a second half powerful drive by Aubrey Modiba in the 67th minute to secure all the three points. Pilican Khumalo ended the game as a contest on the stroke of fulltime to make it 3-1.
Joining Aces on seven points are Mamelodi Sundowns, who did enough to edge AmaZulu 2-1 at the Princess Magogo Stadium - handing the home side their third-straight loss.
The visitors took the lead in the 28th minute when Mpumelelo Hlatshwayo’s pile driver pierced the bottom left corner of Siyabonga Mngoma's net.
Sundowns had the brighter start and through their captain Bonginkosi Ntuli, they threatened the AmaZulu defence constantly. Had they been more clinical in the box, they would have had more than a slender goal cushion.
Siyanda Zwane put the seal on the three points with good finish in the 86th minute to seal the deal for the visitors. Darren Smith pulled one back four minutes later but it was too little, too late.
Bidvest Wits needed a late goal to end Orlando Pirates' unbeaten run in their match at Bidvest Stadium.

In the first match of the day, Chippa United bounced back with a resounding 6-2 win over Free State Stars at the Galvendale Sports Stadium in Eastern Cape.
Khanyisa Mayo and Siyabonga Dabula both scored a brace in a match that produced four goals within the first ten minutes. Reabetswe Rakoti pulled one back for Stars in the 8th minute after Mayo scored in the first and third minute. Dabula opened his account ten minute into the match before completed his brace in the 55th minute, adding the fifth goal after William Twala had found the fourth three minutes earlier.
Sydeny Masana had brought Stars back into the match when he scored their second goal in the 28th minute to make it 3-2. Substitute Somila Ntsundwana completed the rout when he netted the sixth goal, a minute from fulltime.
The tournament moves to Pretoria next weekend where all the teams will be in action both on Saturday and Sunday - the matches will take place at the Tuks Stadium.

Bloemfontein Celtic maintained their winning run when they edged Polokwane City 3-1, to stay top of Group A on seven points. Kaizer Chiefs and University of Pretoria stayed hot on their heels with the same number of points, after beating Ajax Cape Town and Moroka Swallows respectively.
Mpumalanga Black Aces climbed to the top of Group B on goal difference, following their 3-1 win away to Platinum Stars. Mamelodi Sundowns also moved to seven points when they overcame struggling AmaZulu 2-1.
The goalkeeper for this week’s team is Lebogang Ngubeni from Tuks, who kept a clean sheet against a Moroka Swallows side that was determined to bounce back from the 8-0 drubbing they suffered to Celtic. The young shot-stopper stood his ground to help his side register a second-straight win.
The defence is made up of Wits’ Markus Lecki, who produced a man-of-the-match performance, as Bidvest Wits got their first win of the tournament against Orlando Pirates. Pairing him at centre back is the solid Alan Robertson from Tuks, who also had a sterling performance against Swallows.
Black Aces’ Aubrey Modiba occupies the left-back position - the defender was able to cap his outstanding display with a goal against Dikwena. The right-back spot goes to Tshepo Chaine from Celtic, who finally gets recognition from our judges for his impressive performance.
The midfield is filled with exceptional talent in Siyabonga Dabula from Chippa and Chiefs’ rising star Hendrick Ekstein, who is becoming the most popular player in the tournament. Dabula scored a brace against Stars while Esktein netted his second-successive goal at Ajax.
Percy Tau gets a spot on the left wing after he rediscovered his form to help Sundowns return to winning ways against AmaZulu. SuperSport United’s Sydney Mtsweni, who was voted man of the match and got a goal against Maritzburg United, completes the midfield.
Lethola Mofokeng, who some may say had become a forgotten man in local football, returned to Celtic in style - grabbing a hat-trick on debut against Polokwane. He finds a spot upfront with Chippa’s Khanyisa Mayo, who finally opened his account in the tournament, when he scored a brace in the 6-2 win over Stars.
Mayo had not been able to replicate the form he produced to help the national under-20 team (Amajita) qualify for the African Youth Championships, he will be happy to that he’s now managed to score in this competition.
