Liverpool confirmed for CT, but ...

Another hold-up in Liverpool's tour to Cape Town, South Africa
Posted: 3 May 2013 Time: 05:09 pm
While Liverpool's game in Cape Town on May 21 has been confirmed, there is another potential spanner in the works for the troubled fixture.
As KickOff.com reported in April, the match will be played on May 21 at Cape Town Stadium, against yet to be named opposition.
Don't miss:
Cape Town approve Liverpool match in May
City growing frustrated with Liverpool
Ajax Cape Town are the most likely opponents, although that defends on whether they are involved in promotion/relegation play-offs at the end of the League season
However, SuperSport United or Orlando Pirates are involved in the play-off stage of the CAF Confederation Cup on the weekend of May 17-19, then it is likely that the PSL will move the final round of Premiership fixtures from May 18 to May 21 or 22.
This is owing to the PSL ruling that all final round League matches that have a bearing on the top or the bottom of the table must kick-off at the same time.
With SuperSport set to face title-chasing Platinum Stars and Pirates still mathematically in the running with a last round game against Maritzburg United, should either of those teams feature in the next stage of the Confederation Cup, the PSL will likely change the date of the final day of the season.
That is because Kaizer Chiefs’ next opportunity to be crowned champions will only be on May 15 when they face SuperSport in a rescheduled fixture, just three days before the scheduled end of the campaign.
PSL sources have already said they will not wait that long to make a decision on when the final round of matches will be played and are likely to make that call on either Monday or Tuesday next week.
It is highly unlikely they will play the games after the Nedbank Cup Final on May 25, meaning the only available slot will be Tuesday, May 21 or Wednesday, May 22.
Either those dates would see Ajax in action against Golden Arrows and therefore unable to fulfill their obligations for the Liverpool match.
And it would appear unlikely as well that Liverpool would tour any later than that week, with their season also finishing on May 19. There is also the potential that Ajax could be preparing for the promotion/relegation play-offs.
One potential compromise would be to move just the games involving the championship games to midweek and leave the relegation battle for the weekend, but this would go against the global principle of having one final round of matches to capture the drama and excitement of the competition.
The PSL could also be then accused of making a special arrangement to suit one club – Ajax – to the detriment of the entire League.
SuperSport take on Egyptian side ENPPI for a place in the next round of the Confederation Cup on Saturday, with that tie locked at 0-0 with the home leg to come for Matsatsantsa.
If Pirates lose their CAF Champions League tie to TP Mazembe then they will drop down into the Confederation Cup competition. Should they advance then their next CAF action will only be in July.

SuperSport United have crashed out of the CAF Confederation Cup after a 3-1 defeat to ENPPI of Egypt at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
With the scores tied at 0-0 after the first leg in north Africa, United raced out of the blocks and opened the scoring on 10 minutes through George Maluleka's screamer.
However, the visitors were not to be overwhelmed by the occasion and turned the tie on its head with two goals in three minutes through De Fonye on 37 and 40 minutes respectively.
SuperSport came racing out of the blocks after the break, but the tie was effectively killed off when Omraw Ahmed buried a cut-back on 54 minutes.

Should Baxter Get Punished?

06 April 2013
Baxter & Mngqithi
Although the fiery 0-0 Absa Premiership draw between Kaizer Chiefs and Golden Arrows provided many talking points it was the venomous post match comments of Amakhosi coach Stuart Baxter that are likely to spark the liveliest debates amongst the South African football fraternity.
The Scot’s post-match rant prompted a hasty apology from the coach himself as well as the broadcaster but it remains to be seen whether he will escape without further punishment.
Following referee Lwandile Mfiki’s puzzling decision to send off Reneilwe Letsholonyane during the match at Moses Mabhida Stadium, Baxter and Manqoba Mngqithi were involved in a heated exchange on the touchline.
Footage revealed that Abafana Bes’thende’s mentor had sworn at Baxter and after the game the Chiefs coach refused to shake his adversary’s hand.
This prompted an angry response from Mngqithi who suggested that Baxter should “go to hell”, but his comment paled in comparison to Baxter’s words a moment later.
“I don’t shake the hands of coaches that tell me to f*** off. We can have little arguments and we can have views on the referee’s decisions but when a coach walks towards me and tells me that, then I don’t shake his hand,” said the former Bafana Bafana coach.
Even though it was an emotionally charged affair should Baxter be punished for his use of a swear word on televison

Kaizer Chiefs have a chance to further extend their lead at the top of the Absa Premiership when they take on Golden Arrows at the Moses Mabhida Stadium today.
The Amakhosi currently hold a seven point advantage over defending champions Orlando Pirates who are not in action today due to CAF Champions League commitments.
Stuart Baxter’s men come into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw with Maritzburg United midweek although they will be buoyed by the R1.5 million cash injection received for winning Q3.
Meanwhile, Abafana Bes’thende improved their chances of staying in the top flight when they fought back from a goal down to defeat Chippa United 2-1 on Wednesday.
That result snapped a three match winless streak whilst the draw Chiefs secured on the same night was their 12th match without defeat.

Eintracht Frankfurt - Bayern Munich
Eintracht Frankfurt - Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich wrapped up the Bundesliga title with a 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt at the Commerzbank Arena.

Unsurprisngly, with the title there for the winning, Bayern took the early initiative, with Mario Gomez, Arjen Robben and David Alaba all finding space down the wings, but the first effort of note came from Frankfurt as Takashi Inui fired over from distance.

The visitors, however, were certainly the team on top. Some neat build-up play from Robben and Thomas Muller presented Xherdan Shaqiri with the chance to shoot, and the Swiss youngster's long-range effort rattled the post.

In the 26th minute, Bayern was presented with a golden opportunity to take an early lead. Marco Russ' shove on Thomas Muller saw the referee point to the spot, but Alaba's penalty was a poor one, striking the post en route to going wide.

The miss almost proved costly. Within seconds, a fantastic last-ditch challenge from Jerome Boateng prevented Inui from running clear.

Jupp Heynckes' side came out with renewed intensity after the restart, with Gomez forcing the ball to Robben under heavy pressure, only for the Dutchman to miss from a matter of yards.

But their wastefulness did not continue. Philipp Lahm found some space down the right and fed Schweinsteiger, who flicked it brilliantly into the net at the near post.

Despite only trailing by one goal, Frankfurt had no sort of impetus until late on. Indeed, Manuel Neuer was not forced into a save of note until the hour mark, when he was forced to get down to save Inui's tame long-range strike.

The Bavarians were almsot forced to put the champagne on ice 10 minutes from time when Stefan Aigner's ball found Srdjan Lakic unmarked, but Neuer was alert enough to make a brilliant save.

The former Schalke keeper made another great block second later after a goalmouth scramble following a corner, ensuring that Schweinsteiger's strike was enough for the title.

Bayern Clinch title

BERLIN, April 6 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich won their 22nd Bundesliga title in record time on Saturday by beating Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 to open up an unassailable 20-point lead with six games left in the season.
The Bavarians ended the two-year reign of Borussia Dortmund by clinching the title faster than any club in the Bundesliga's 50-year history. It was also Bayern's 23rd German league title in all.
Bastian Schweinsteiger beautifully flicked the ball into the net with a backheel in the 52nd minute to lift Bayern to 75 points, 20 ahead of second-placed Dortmund, who beat Augsburg 4-2.
Bayern are chasing an unprecedented treble for a German club, with the Champions League and German Cup also up for grabs.
Fresh from their 2-0 Champions League quarter-final first leg victory over Juventus, Bayern should have scored much earlier, with Xherdan Shaqiri rattling the post with a low shot in the 10th minute.
David Alaba sent his penalty to the exact same spot 15 minutes later as Bayern showed some nerves.
Schweinsteiger made sure of their 11th straight league win this year with his seventh goal of the campaign, flicking in a superb Philipp Lahm cross to ease the tension.
Keeper Manuel Neuer needed to come to the rescue late in the game as Frankfurt, battling for a Champions League spot, poured forward.
Dortmund rested seven key players ahead of their own Champions League quarter-final second leg against Malaga next week, but had little trouble easing past Augsburg despite briefly trailing 2-1.
Bundesliga top scorer Robert Lewandowski sealed their victory with his 21st goal of the campaign after a Julian Schieber double.
Fourth-placed Schalke 04 kept their own Champions League hopes alive after beating Werder Bremen 2-0 with goals from Julian Draxler and Ciprian Marica to move up to 45 points, four behind Bayer Leverkusen, who drew 1-1 against VfL Wolfsburg.

Afcon

AFCON 2013: Zambia 1-1 Nigeria

A clash between two African heavyweights ends in stalemate as the Zambian keeper's penalty cancels out Emenike's strike after an early spotkick miss from John Obi Mikel.

After only managing draws in their first Group C matches, two of the Africa Cup of Nations heavyweights clashed in Nelspruit as Nigeria and Zambia battled for some crucial Afcon points.

Nigeria overcame the early setback of a missed John Obi Mikel penalty with Emmanuel Emenike’s goal on 57 minutes, however, Zambia responded with a penalty of their own – keeper Kennedy Mweene with a stunning spotkick to secure the draw.

The tension was palpable in the early stages, with both sides knowing that whilst defeat would be near-fatal, a draw would only serve to increase the immense pressure ahead of their final group game.

The opening twenty minutes were characterised by a lack of quality, and a propensity for long balls from both sets of defences.

With the hard, sandy pitch not conducive to slick, silky passing play, this seemed like the wisest option – but the consequence was a a great many aimless punts that led to nothing. One smart Zambian move carved out a neat chance for Rainford Kalaba, but the Mazembe man blazed the ball over the top.

On 25 minutes, it looked as though Nigeria had found the break-through. Davies Nkausu, under pressure from Ahmed Musa, brought the CSKA Moscow man down, the ref not hesitating to point to the spot.

John Obi Mikel stepped up, the midfielder looking to recreate his crucial converted penalty against Liberia in the qualifiers. Unfortunately, it was not to be, as the Chelsea player’s spot kick was tame and scuffed, and thudded harmlessly off the post.

The game progressed in a cagey, uninspiring fashion, Emmanuel Emenike – Naija’s goalscorer in their first match – was unable to contend with the many balls played over the top of the Chipolopolo defence.

Things improved in the second period, Nigeria looking brighter and nearly taking the lead with Ahmed Musa breaking away down the right and sending a cross-cum-shot across the goal which Emmanuel Emenike failed to touch into the net.

Ten minutes into the second half, the young striker finally made his mark with a fine finish pushing the Super Eagles ahead. After pick-pocketing Lungu in midfield, John Obi Mikel made amends for his earlier miss and played Emenike in through the middle, the striker made no mistake, and fired Naija ahead with a clever finish.

Zambia sought far and wide for the inspiration that would see them claim some points, it eventually came from an unlikely source. The referee, seeing something that few others did, gave a penalty for the Chipolopolo after minimum contact on Mayuka by Onazi. Goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene stepped up, and looking as calm as can be, he dispatched a beautiful spot-kick past Vincent Enyeama.

Keen to avoid a second successive collapse, Nigeria knocked at the door, but neither team managed to find the net again in the game’s dying embers, and the pair had to settle for the draw.

The result leaves the holders in grave danger of elimination, they will need to beat the Stallions next Tuesday and hope that results go their way. Nigeria will also need to up their game on Tuesday against Ethiopia to ensure their continued Afcon participation.
